Urban River Adventures: Navigating the Challenges of Eco-Tourism Amidst a Global Shift
In the wake of the Covid era, Urban River Adventures emerged as a bold, innovative concept that resonated with travelers looking for sustainable, nature-based experiences. Nestled along the majestic North Saskatchewan River, the glamping site provided an exciting and luxurious eco-tourism adventure. Our 2021 season was a tremendous success, with over 4,000 guests enjoying the unique opportunity to reconnect with nature through our eco-friendly glamping accommodations. However, our journey has been anything but smooth, especially as we transitioned into the 2022 season on a new property and faced unforeseen compliance challenges.
The Bold Pivot During the Covid Era
The concept of Urban River Adventures was born out of a desire to provide a safe, luxurious, and sustainable escape during one of the most challenging times in recent history. During the Covid era, many travelers were looking for alternatives to traditional travel, where they could immerse themselves in nature while maintaining social distance. Glamping, which combines the best aspects of camping and comfort, became the perfect solution.
Our 2021 season on the island in the North Saskatchewan River was a resounding success, offering a unique blend of luxury camping and eco-friendly practices. Guests enjoyed everything from kayaking and fishing to stargazing and nature walks. We were honored to be a part of Edmonton’s growing eco-tourism movement and to contribute to the North Saskatchewan River’s legacy. It was a season filled with adventure, memories, and a deep connection to nature.
However, we understood that growth was essential for the long-term success of Urban River Adventures, which led us to make a significant pivot in 2022.
Transitioning to Parkland County: New Challenges
With the success of the 2021 season behind us, we decided to transition from the island to a new location on a private property in Parkland County for the 2022 season. The property offered immense potential for expanding our offerings and providing guests with an even more immersive eco-tourism adventure. However, the transition came with its own set of challenges.
While the 2022 season started strong, we soon encountered compliance issues with the county. The property's existing road, existing structures, and the county's specific bylaws related to the geodome accommodations became significant hurdles. As a business that prided itself on being eco-friendly and sustainable, we were committed to adhering to local regulations and meeting all requirements.
Despite our best efforts, the path forward became increasingly complex. We worked tirelessly to meet Parkland County’s requirements in time for the 2023 season, but unfortunately, we were unable to resolve the compliance issues related to the property's infrastructure and the geodomes. This setback was both unexpected and deeply challenging for our business.
Refunds and Financial Strain: The Difficult 2023 Season
One of the most difficult moments in Urban River Adventures’ journey was the cancellation of the 2023 season. We had already secured bookings for the season, and guests were eagerly anticipating their glamping adventure. However, due to the ongoing compliance challenges and delays in resolving the county’s requirements, we had no choice but to refund all the bookings. It was a devastating blow, both financially and emotionally.
Refunding our guests was the right thing to do, but it exhausted our remaining funds. We had invested heavily in efforts to meet the county’s requirements, from working on the property’s infrastructure to seeking expert advice. Unfortunately, those funds ran dry, and we found ourselves in a very precarious financial situation.
Refusing to Give Up: Exploring Every Option
Despite the challenges and setbacks, I refused to give up on Urban River Adventures. I knew that we had built something truly special in 2021, and I was determined to find a way to reopen the business. I explored every possible option, hoping that one of them would lead to a solution.
First, I sought out experienced partners who could provide insight and resources to help navigate the county’s regulations. I also engaged with potential investors who shared our vision for sustainable eco-tourism and were willing to contribute financially to the business.
To ensure we were following the best possible path, I hired consultants and collaborated with engineers to tackle the technical challenges we were facing with the property. We worked diligently to design a plan that met the county’s compliance standards while staying true to our eco-friendly principles.
Despite all of these efforts, the obstacles proved insurmountable. The timelines for resolving the compliance issues continued to stretch, and with limited resources left, it became clear that reopening the business was no longer feasible in the immediate future.
Lessons Learned and Looking to the Future
While the journey has been difficult, Urban River Adventures remains a proud chapter in Edmonton’s history and the legacy of the North Saskatchewan River. We created a unique and beloved experience in 2021, proving that there is a growing demand for eco-tourism adventures that combine sustainability, luxury, and a deep connection to nature.
The lessons learned during the transition to Parkland County have been invaluable. From navigating compliance challenges to managing the financial realities of a small business, I have gained a wealth of experience that will shape any future endeavors. I remain hopeful that one day, Urban River Adventures—or a new venture inspired by it—will rise again and continue to offer guests the unforgettable experience of eco-friendly glamping in the beautiful wilderness of Alberta.
For now, I’m proud of what we accomplished and the impact we had on the lives of those 4,000+ guests who joined us for the 2021 season. Urban River Adventures may have faced its challenges, but the vision of combining Canadian wilderness glamping with sustainable tourism continues to inspire and motivate me as I look toward the future.
